As the summer rain ramps up and hurricane season looms, the City of North Port is stepping up its storm prep by extending the hours of its sandbag station. Local residents can now pick up free sand and sandbags at the self-serve station located behind the George Mullen Activity Center at 1602 Kramer Way—a spot long familiar to seasoned storm-season veterans.
With excessive rainfall in the forecast, this proactive move is all about helping residents get ahead of potential flooding. The station will be stocked throughout the season to ensure availability, and residents can collect up to 10 sandbags per vehicle. That limit will be monitored and enforced to ensure everyone has a fair chance to prepare.
Heads up: You’ll need to bring your own shovel if you can. While there will be a few on site, supplies are limited.
Once you’ve got your bags filled and set, don’t toss them after the storms pass. If they stay dry, they can be stored in a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight and reused next year or anytime the weather takes a turn.
This is a great opportunity to get your home ready, especially if you live in a low-lying or flood-prone area of North Port or Wellen Park. It’s also a good reminder to review your full hurricane preparedness checklist—now’s the time to stock up on batteries, check your generators, and review your evacuation routes, just in case.
