Wellen Park Developer Responds to Irrigation Dispute with Gran Paradiso Community

Share

Wellen Park, FL — Over the past six years, Mattamy Homes, serving as the master developer of Wellen Park, has remained committed to the ongoing enhancement of the region. Through significant investments in job creation, healthcare, education, diverse housing options, and a range of commercial, retail, entertainment, and recreational amenities, the developer has sought to foster a vibrant and sustainable community for both residents and visitors. This commitment, Mattamy affirms, will continue to guide its efforts moving forward.

Recently, however, a dispute concerning irrigation water usage has emerged involving Gran Paradiso, one of the original neighborhoods within the Wellen Park area, but notably, a community that was not developed by Mattamy.

According to statements from Mattamy, water is a limited and highly seasonal resource. Over the past four years, Gran Paradiso has repeatedly and significantly exceeded its allocated irrigation water usage. In response to broader sustainability initiatives, irrigation rates across Wellen Park were adjusted two years ago — the first increase in over five years — by a modest $4.17 per month. All other communities within Wellen Park accepted and complied with the new rates.

Despite multiple notifications and advisories regarding their excessive water consumption, as well as warnings about potential consequences, Gran Paradiso allegedly continued to overuse irrigation water. Mattamy reports that this persistent overuse jeopardized the permit issued by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFMD), which ensures irrigation access for the entire Wellen Park master plan.

Consequently, SWFMD reallocated Gran Paradiso’s irrigation water allocation. In response, Gran Paradiso initiated legal action to terminate its irrigation agreement with the Wellen Park Village Improvement District (WVID). With the recent termination of this agreement, the community has obtained the relief it sought. Mattamy emphasizes that while Gran Paradiso continues to have access to irrigation water, it is no longer provided under the WVID agreement or the SWFMD permit.

Mattamy Homes reaffirms its dedication to responsible resource management and the continued development of Wellen Park as a thriving, balanced community.
